NAPLAN 2026 Writing Test Dates

The NAPLAN 2026 test window runs from 11 to 23 March 2026. Schools choose which days to schedule each domain (reading, writing, conventions of language, numeracy), so your child's writing test may fall on any day within this window.

What Does the Writing Test Look Like?

Students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 all sit the same writing test format:

  • One prompt — either a narrative (story) or persuasive topic
  • 42 minutes to plan and write their response
  • Typed on a computer (Year 5, 7, 9) or handwritten (Year 3)
  • No spell-check is available during the test

The prompt includes a short stimulus (a sentence, image, or both) and clear instructions about what to write.

How Is NAPLAN Writing Marked?

NAPLAN writing is assessed against 10 criteria across two main areas:

For Narrative Writing

  • Audience (engagement, orientation, conclusion)
  • Text structure (paragraphing, cohesion)
  • Ideas (content, elaboration)
  • Character and setting (development, detail)
  • Vocabulary (range, precision)
  • Cohesion (connectives, referencing)
  • Paragraphing (structure, purpose)
  • Sentence structure (variety, control)
  • Punctuation (accuracy, range)
  • Spelling (accuracy across different word types)

For Persuasive Writing

  • Audience (persuasive techniques, tone)
  • Text structure (introduction, arguments, conclusion)
  • Ideas (relevance, supporting evidence)
  • Persuasive devices (rhetorical questions, emotive language)

How Can Parents Help?

The best preparation is familiarity with the format. Children who have practised writing under timed conditions on a computer feel more confident and perform better.

Here's what you can do at home:

  • Practice typing — even 5 minutes a day can significantly improve output
  • Try timed writing — set a 42-minute timer and let them write a full response
  • Read the prompt carefully — teach them to underline key words
  • Plan before writing — a 5-minute plan leads to better structure
  • Use writing frameworks — Story Mountain, TEEL, or CER structures help organise ideas
